Choosing a Home Physiotherapist for a Parent
Practical questions for families hiring physiotherapy at home in India — credentials, goals, communication and red flags.
Home physiotherapists vary widely in training, punctuality and how they explain plans to families. Adult children — especially those comparing options from another city — need a short diligence list, not a popularity contest on a housing society WhatsApp group.
Care4Parents does not hire or rate therapists. This is editorial guidance only.
Confirm the basics
Ask about qualification, registration where applicable, and experience with your parent’s situation (post-stroke, joint replacement, frailty, Parkinson’s). Request a clear fee structure: per session, travel charges, cancellation rules, and festival coverage.
A first session should include assessment and goal-setting, not only a quick massage and exit. If everything is “ten sessions fixed” before examination, be cautious.
Goals, homework and updates
Good therapists translate clinical findings into daily goals and leave a short home programme. They should welcome questions from the attendant who will cue exercises between visits. Written or photographed exercise sheets help consistency.
Ask how progress will be reviewed and when to return to the orthopaedic surgeon or neurologist. For session logistics and safety framing, see physiotherapy at home.
Communication with distant family
NRIs can request a monthly summary: what improved, what stalled, what to fund next. Video join-ins work when the parent consents and the therapist agrees. Do not demand mid-session coaching that undermines the professional’s plan.
One sibling on-ground should own scheduling so the therapist is not juggling three calendars.
Red flags
Pain dismissed without explanation, pressure to buy branded equipment from the therapist’s cousin, refusal to coordinate with the treating doctor, or exercises that ignore surgical weight-bearing limits — pause and seek another opinion from the clinician.
If chest symptoms, fainting or neurological changes appear during therapy, stop and use emergency or clinic pathways as appropriate.
Ask early about leave cover: who comes when the usual therapist is ill during a critical post-surgery window. Continuity matters more than a slightly lower fee that vanishes every other week. Keep session notes in the same family health folder used for labs and discharge summaries.
